Conversion of my Indigenous History of Canada class

I’m attending an Indigenous History of Canada class, and the students there basically view the Catholic Church and Evangelization as evil. It is true that the residential schools were clearly a horrible atrocity maybe even worse than the crusades and the inquisition (mainly because the crusades and inquisition have been heavily mythologized by ant-Catholic propaganda). But you should hear these students, they speak as though Christianity is the most evil thing ever and that if you so much as show up with a crucifix in your hand you’re a horrible, evil person who wants to exterminate aboriginals. I’ve been saying novenas to Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. John The Baptist and St. Kateri Tekawitha but now my prayer life is preoccupied with other issues, so I’m asking anyone out there to pray on me behalf for the conversion of this class or at least that they cease blashpemying.

People take it out on any-one at all - specially if someone is any kind of “minority”. Praying for you and for them.

Prayer of Apology and Thanksgiving because of forgetfulness to say “thank You” to Our Lord for all the blessings He pours on us and we do not even realize it. The thread could also be closed before we know it and I want to get the “thank You” in. 😉 🙂

There is a lot of irony in today’s position on residential schools, and it is a great pity that very few do any real research into their history and intended purpose.

If one does research into the archives of the day by investigating news articles, there were some very diverse opinions as to how to handle a situation that was being reported from the far reaches of Canada at the time.

Aboriginal peoples were in crisis due to an apparent inability to adapt to the rapidly changing sociological landscape and this was leading many in these communities to alcoholism due to extreme despair, poverty, and starvation.

The discussion at the time revolved around how best to manage this crisis, recalling that there were no safety-nets of any kind (aside from some localized ‘work-houses’ for the desperately poor) and that many of the aboriginal people did not speak fluent English, the argument came down to two main ideologies:
  1. Allow the aboriginal people to starve out naturally.
This was the ‘conservative’ viewpoint of the day as it would solve the problem without cost to taxpayers and would eliminate what was then seen as a nuisance population of uncivilized individuals who were largely seen as undesirable and/or incompatible with civilized society.
  1. Provide a means by which a generation might be given the tools necessary to assimilate with the rest of society.
This was the ‘liberal’ viewpoint, as it put forth the premise that the weakest members on the reserves (ie. the children) were suffering the greatest hardships while at the same time being blameless for the entire situation. The concept then was that in order to completely sever the possibility that this generation might be negatively influenced (contaminated) by the behavior and ‘backward’ customs of their parents, the children had to be removed from the negative environments and brought into a locale where they could be properly taught and assimilated. In this way they would be taught proper English (which is why they were not allowed to speak their language in school) to allow them the hope of normal employment, as well as a complete repression of their cultures (which were seen as a large reason why aboriginal peoples were not behaving like all of the diverse European cultures who were managing to come from impoverished backgrounds and yet seemingly adapt to their new environment).

This was seen as being ultimately humane and incredibly caring as one must consider the great cost and effort this enterprise cost taxpayers of the day while any potential rewards or dividends were anticipated only to arrive many years later.

Further, because the only organizations even remotely capable of undertaking so great a project were the United and Catholic Churches, the government sought their assistance.

From our modern-day perspective this all may appear incredibly harsh, but one must recall that similar circumstances had been experienced first-hand by many recent immigrants to Canada (think of the Irish being purposefully starved by their rich English land-owners to assist with population control during the Potato Famine, etc.) so they were imagining a solution that they might have wished offered to themselves at some point.

What appears lost to most modern history teachings is the comparison between how humanity used to deal with its impoverished classes in general, as well as how often children were ‘abused’ in the name of discipline. There is relatively little truly remarkable about the treatment of aboriginals when seen through this specific lens.

Please take care that you are fully aware of the events that have caused this reaction. I have family in Canada working with First Nation people and this will take generations to even start to fade. It is a form of PTSD in many ways, Pray for them and be patient and loving

Bravo for your courage in STAYING in a
class that puts down the Catholic Church!!
Remember that it is NOT you they hate,
what you seem to stand for, of course
you cannot say that you APPROVE
what was done those parochial schools
for Native children, so it’s Okay to say
the the Church, who supported this form
of “education” made a mistake, even
Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI apologized
to the Native victims of these schools!!
