Converting and what books to get

Greetings!

I am going to be starting the RCIA process this coming September, and was wondering what books are going to be useful to me? If anyone has any information, I would sincerely appreciate it!

Why are they making you wait until September? Ask if you can sit in on the sessions they are having now. Are you baptized already in another Christian faith. If so you many not have to wait until Easter 2012 to enter the Church.
 
I’m not a convert … well not technically speaking, I’d just been away from the church for a long long time. I returned with my daughter a month ago, and has it ever been wonderful!

But enough of that story, I would suggest Scott Hahn. I’ve found him, myself to be rather good.Beyond him, I’ve been looking myself so I will be watching your thread.

I think it depends on where your interest lies presently.

May I suggest “Salvation is From the Jews” by Roy Schoeman. It’s inspirational from a catholic convert perspective and highly informative from an eduactional perspective.

It’s not necassarily a book on apologetics. It’s apologetics but wrapped up in a personal story as well as historical, both ancient and modern.

For feeling tremendous aww of someone’s faith, I’d suggest “The Imitation of Christ”.

If you like audio talks (like audio books, kinda), you can download as many talks as you like from my website: alabamacatholicresources.com They’re all good, solid talks.

I especially recommend the series by the late Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen on the Catechsim:

Depends on how knowledgable you currently are about the faith… having had no prior knowledge (I’m also waiting on September) I started reading Catholicism for Dummies and the Ignatius Study Bible you can get both on Amazon for under $30 total.

Both have been very beneificial in helping me understand and appreciate the faith I’m approaching more and more 👍

Actually, there is so much out there it hard to know what to say, but these are some things I remember reading at the time. 🙂

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (I was so thrilled to discover something like this existed in the world – I felt like I’d been handed the greatest treasure, after the Bible).

Patrick Madrid’s Surprised by Truth

Rome Sweet Rome by the Hahns (anything by Scott Hahn is good).

Books by Fr. Oscar Lukefahr of the Catholic Home Study Service, especially We Believe http://www.amm.org/chss.htm

Catholicism and Fundamentalism: The Attack on “Romanism” by "Bible Christians by Karl Keating

And I love this online resource: www.catholiceducation.org

Thank you so much for all your suggestions. I have written them down and I will certainly take a look at each and every one in turn. I did speak to Father J, albeit via email, regarding what books he recommends and he told me they use the Jerusalem Bible in Mass, although he likes the NRSV. He also suggested The Catechism of the Catholic Church too. I will certainly get these 3 books next weekend, due to funds!

Father J also said I am more than welcome to join the current RCIA class, which meets on Monday evenings. I plan on going to the one a week from Monday. I am baptised in the Church of England (already got my baptism certificate from the church where that occured) so I will have to ask if I have to go through the entire RCIA programme this Fall and wait until Easter next year.

So thank you all, again, and I hope we can ‘talk’ again!

sorry your parish does not have year round RCIA but don’t invest too much in books as they might be given to you. The best first book I can think of is Catholicism for Dummies by Fr. Trigilio (the yellow one, not the blue-orange idiot’s guide) which is at any bookstore or on amazon.

for scripture, start with Matthew’s gospel, read an meditate on it between now and September.
