Hello all. My name is Nathan Sams. My wife and I both feel called to become Catholics. I was raised Methodist and my wife was raised Non Denominational. We have a Catholic Church near by us but we work crazy schedules and are often unable to attend Mass. Also because our schedules change weekly their isn’t really a way that we know of to sign up for RCIA classes. Any advice on what we can still do to begin our conversions would be greatly appreciated!

Go ahead and call the parish to ask about RCIA. The director will be able to tell you what kinds of resources they have available. Perhaps they will be in a position to accommodate your schedule or perhaps they will have other options in mind. But get to know them and let them know what you need so you can start to work together.

Welcome home!

Sit down and talk to the pastor. (Wait until after Holy Week because it is run up to the Super Bowl sort of crazy at parishes these next two weeks!!)

Do attend the Easter Vigil this year.

Private instruction, flex schedules, all of these things can be worked out.

Hi.

Well, the first step is definitely to call the parish and ask what can be done.

I just want to caution you not to get discouraged if the person on the other side of the phone seems not so eager to help. Sometimes secretaries say they are going to do something and they forget, or The priest never gets a message intended for him or a priest can’t get back to someone for a week or two. It’s just how it is sometimes.

If you do not get good help at the closest parish then try at another parish. I know it would be great to be helped and go to rcia at the closest parish but sometimes only a parish further away can help. I help teach rcia at my parish and we have people from tens of miles away and we live in a metropolitan area.

The other thing is that attending Mass on Sundays and Holy days of obligation are required. “Honor the Sabbath and keep it holy” it’s God’s commandment not just The Churches that Mass is non optional. Unless you can get a dispensation from your senior pastor you must go to Mass once you are Catholic. I have told my boss in the past “sorry I must come in 30 minuets late, I need to go to Mass” etc… However I don’t know your situation so do not just do what I did if it would get you fired, talk to a priest about it

Welcome and God speed!
