Does anyone besides clergy know what this is and what goes on at one? I am going to be at one most of this week. I will pray for those on this site.

Deacon Tony

I went to a Catholic University and during the first week each year we attended the Presiden’ts Convocation. He addressed the students and faculty, gave us a sort of “state of the U” address, kind of a pep talk for the year, and then we finished with:

President Br. Louis: St. John Baptist De La Salle:

Students/Faculty: Pray for us!

President: "Live, Jesus, In our Hearts!..

Students/Faculty: Forever!

Beyond that, I have no idea what can take a whole week long. You’ll have to let us know!

We attend them annually. A convocation is merely a meeting of like minded people for a specific purpose with speakers etc.

The deacons of our diocese gather every spring, and have a speaker, break out sessions, a meal and more catechesis from the same speaker. The speaker includes handouts or lists of areas to learn more about the same. Occasionally, a bishop will be present, and there is question and answer time. In all, it is a good time for learning and prayer. Many convocations also have tribute time as well for those who have won awards for their ministry and they are presented there as well. It is always a good day.

Wow! Took over a week to get an answer, but it came in! Each year in our diocese the priests and deacons are required to attend a convocation. We have instruction periods, this year was on preparing a good homily. We also have plenty of social time, where we can visit with priests and fellow deacons, many of whom we have not seen for some time as our diocese is very large in land miles. Each day there is morning prayer with celebration of the Eucharist. Bishop attends all of the classes and stays with the group for the entire time from Mon. evening to Thurs. morning. The parish pays for rooms and meals for it’s priests and deacons. It is difficult for some deacons with jobs, family matters Etc. to attend, but somehow most do attend.

God bless,
Deacon Tony
