Dear all,

I heard somebody said that we should only cook what’s necessary on Sunday.
Is it alright to cook dessert on Sunday?

Thank you. I am looking forward to hear from you.

The Catholic Church does not have a rule against cooking on Sunday.
Many Catholic families enjoy a big Sunday dinner as a nice family activity.
It is fine to cook dessert, or anything else.

Fast well, feast well. Sunday was traditionally the feast day (even in Lent).

You do fast before Mass, traditionally. Now I think they only require no eating one hour or more before Mass, unless medically necessary to eat.

Went from no food after midnight until Mass, to 4 hours before, now to one hour before.

Nowhere anywhere does it say, afaik, that you cannot enjoy dessert or take the time to make a dessert on a Sunday.

One should not be working excessively on Sunday, and one should maintain prayerful attitude.

If you were cooking desserts as a job, this would be an issue. If you were cooking desserts as a job in a hospital, it’s likely a bit more necessary to have cooks working Sundays for hospitals, so whatever the boss asks of you, you’d do. Ie patients need to be able to eat.

So maybe it depends on the context, but I think as you mean it, there is no issue whatsoever. Cook before Church or after, but maybe enjoy the dessert only after Mass is done, unless you go to Mass late in the day.

The Catechism explicitly says it’s okay to cook desserts in a restaurant on Sunday, as long as you make sure to still set some time aside for leisure (and of course meet your Mass obligation, which can also be done on Saturday evening). It’s understood that people and families eating out on Sunday is a traditional leisure activity. The Church does not require that the cooking be for a hospital or some other institution.

CCC 2187 reads in part:
Traditional activities (sport, restaurants, etc.), and social necessities (public services, etc.), require some people to work on Sundays, but everyone should still take care to set aside sufficient time for leisure.

I was implying any public service, not hospitals alone.

The issue being more/less that someone that takes any jobs usually works more than a couple hours and would not be able to set aside a decent amount of time.

What OP is asking really looks to be more scrupulous than this sort of this anyway. I am not in mood to debate, so enjoy.

I’m not here to debate either. Just pointing out that the Catholic Church allows people to cook in restaurants where the public eat on Sunday. Your post suggested this was not allowed. We strive to give correct information here.

As for people’s hours, they usually can work that out with their supervisor, and in any event if they need to keep their job by working on Sunday, the forum generally advises them that if they can make sure to attend Mass and spend a little family time, that’s sufficient.

God bless.

Are you talking about making desserts at home for your personal family? My mother might make a cake or pie, or just Jello depending on her mood. Or maybe we had ice cream or watermelon or other melons for dessert. If a person works in a restaurant or a hospital, of course they would make desserts and other food for people. My mother never worried about this. Sometimes after mass we would go eat some place for lunch.Nothing fancy, Maybe Captain jim’s and have burgers or go to Youngblood’s Chicken, or weinerschnitzel. Nothing wrong with cooking for your family on Sundays.

We have Sunday gravy at our house. Usually some marinara with some homemade pasta. Then one of my children was on a baking contest show on television so she usually hits up a pie, cake, cupcake, cookie, etc. usually decorated for a saint of the week. Sometimes we do steak and ice cream or something. But Sunday dinners are definitely our most technical of the week. And the most delicious! Maybe s’mores this week!
