I’m having trouble with a situation. My mother asked me to drive her to the doctor’s next month for a colonoscopy. The trouble is, that for her insurance to cover it her doctor fudged the paperwork. Her insurance won’t cover screening and would only do it if she had symptoms. She’s past the age when it should be done and her sister found a polyp during her screening so it would be wise to do. However, I don’t feel right about since it seems liked I’d be helping to rip off the insurance company.

Any advice on what to do? I wish the doctor just called up the insurance company in the first place and tried to get them to cover it without lying.

Quick update:

My mother’s health insurance magazine advertises that people age 50+ should get a colonoscopy alongside two other screening tests that she knows are covered by her health insurance. It seems that the doctor fudged the paperwork without even checking to see if the insurance company would cover it in the first place. Since it seems irrational for her health insurance magazine to advertise things they wouldn’t cover, should I just forget about it or find out for ceratin if they cover it?

Is it possible for you to offer to pay for the procedure? That way your mom can get needed medical treatment and your conscious will be clear.

Madia,

What does your mother think of what her doctor is doing? Is she going along with it? Does she think it’s okay? My mother is one to fudge things over and be dishonest in her dealings, so I just wanted to clarify before giving my opinion.

I’m not sure what my mother thinks about the doctor doing it. From my understanding, she just mentioned that she wasn’t sure her health insurance covered it so he just fudged it without checking. The thing is it probably is covered but would be awkard to check for certain since the procedure was already approved. The only think I think she could do is call up and see how often they cover it and under what circumstances. My guess is that they cover it once every ten years (the reccommended amount) unless there’s symptoms. If they say it’s covered every ten years regardless then the fudging the doctor did wouldn’t really affect anything. It’s just that it would probably be awkard for her to call seeing that everything’s already approved.

A family history along with her age would be a good sound medical reason to have your mom looked at.

So not sure the dr REALLY fudged, as he is having her checked out because he has reason to suspect she could be having problems.
Kind of like a search warrent 🙂
So it’s not really a screening out of the blue for no reason, see what I mean?

At least this is my guess. Maybe your mother misunderstood the Drs reasoning.
