This has probably been asked before, but I couldn’t find it. Is it wrong to copy a CD for one’s own use? There doesn’t seem to be a problem with other types of copying, but CD’s seem to be more controversial. Or maybe not. I’m confused.

There is nothing wrong with making a copy of a CD you purchased for your own use. I do this so as to protect the original and keep it from getting scratched/ruined. I also make “mix” CDs that take some songs of of many of my CDs so that I can take just that one mix CD on trips.

I own the originals, I do not share them, so there is no problem there.

The problem is with copying music that you did not purchase, such as illegal downloads off the internet or copying and sharing music with friends.

Magicsilence…

If by “sharing” you mean letting friends borrow music… copy or original… yes this is ok.

If “sharing” means making 10 copies of a CD and passing them out to your friends… for them to keep… probably don’t want to do be doing this. If you already have, just don’t do it it anymore.
