My general rule is that it is not ok to copy copyrighted music. But people have copied tapes for me, my daughter has taken songs from a purchased CD and downloaded it onto her IPOD. I have bought a CD and copied it to a tape since we didn’t have a CD player in the car. Would this be stealing? Would restitution require throwing out the copies of the music, or paying for them?

If you were using the copy of CD for your own personal use, then that wouldn’t be considered a copywrite infringement. If, however, you made a copy of CD and gave to someone else, then you’ve crossed the line.

What about those times that someone else did the copying and gave it to me. Would you get rid of it? In all instances it would be something that I would not buy on my own.
