I would like to add what I have in my DVD collection to the Church’s lending library but have had problems before, with books and CD’s not coming back. Would it be wrong, or perhaps even a sin, to make copies of my originals to lend out?

Yes, I think that this would definitely be a copyright violation. If you were making backup copies for yourself you could make an argument (though tenuous) for legitimate and fair use. However, I think your proposed use clearly strays into the world of copyright violation. The last time I checked, the penalty was something like up to $250,000 and/or 20 years in prison. Purchasing a copy specifically for the church’s library would be your safest bet.

Thanks, I am not worried about the copyright issues legally, the chances of even a slap on the wrist in Canada are zero. My concern is the morality of doing it. The DVDs were gifts from family If I lost them I wouldn’t replace them due to cost. If I wasn’t so sure that over time all the DVD’s will disappear I would gladly lend them or perhaps even buy copies for the Church.

I guess I should look at the location of the person to whom I speaking from now on! 😊 😃 It hadn’t even occurred to me that you were not in the same country as me.

I do this with my tapes, CD’s, DVD’s. The original copy is locked up in a file cabinet. SO both cannot be used at the same time. Otherwise it would be better to go and buy another copy for lending, if you want to still use the original yourself at the same time.

No worries, I really value you’re opinion. I am feeling guilty about making the copies, but I just know that the originals will be lost, not out of theft or malicious intent, but most of the time it just gets passed around and around until it ends up at someones house that lives no where near the Church and intends to bring it back but that day just never comes. A lot of my DVD’s are Father Corapi’s and I am sure everyone knows just how pricey they are (worth it though!) 🙂
