Hi,

I am currently in a religious community of friars and a few movies we have are copies. Now, there is also a copied typing tutorial program. I am seeing if this is okay in this community given that theoretically the house is under a vow of poverty even though we dont live frugally by any means.

Can I use the following as a justification for this practice: If one was walking past an orchard, plucking one or 2 apples without paying for them would not be a sin given the large number of apples in the orchard. So, analogously, given the large number of movies the producing company would sell, can making a copy of a few movies for the one house be okay as well?

Thankyou,

Thomas

Thomas, if you are a member of this community, you should bring this concern to the attention of the superior.

A vow of poverty does not translate into a license to steal. If you can’t afford to buy something, then you’ll need to find a way to borrow it or do without.

But what if the superior is the one who is bringing in the copied movies. should I still say something to him?

Thankyou.

I would say something. Let them know it is wrong.

But from experience, it may fall on deaf ears. They just don’t care or can’t bring themselves to understand the issue.

After telling them I would refuse to watch the movies or use any of the pirated software. You may win more over with this witness than with supplying them the information.

And then go to the public library and check out movies. It’s free and it’s moral. Also, if family asks what you want for Christmas/birthday ask them for the typing software and movies.

Yes, of course. There may be more to it than you are aware of, and the superior can let you know about whatever the circumstances are. OR, the superior may profit from your question, realize that you should not be using copies, and get rid of them.

In any case, you should ask respectfully. Perhaps something like, “I noticed we are using some copied movies and software. How does this work with copyright laws?” And whatever answer you get, be at peace. Your superior bears the responsibility.
