This weekend a freind and myself attended a “Catholic men of faith conference” in Nashville, which we paid a modest ticket price to attend & it included lunch. It lasted 1 day and had 3 speakers who were converts to Catholicism from various Protestant denominations. The speakers were Tim Staples & two retired pro sports players Kevin Reilley & Darrell Miller. Excellent event!

My question pertains to the large scale portable burning operation of CDs done at the end of the day and were sold for $15 for all three. It is an instant memory keep of the day’s talks. The CD recording is good but also somewhat informal in that it doesn’t come in a fancy case or a fancy label on the disc. These are not something you find sold at stores or websites, at least not today nor would it be in the form I bought it if it ever were to be sold. I also bought a Tim staples CD recording called “Last Call” which is under the name of Catholic Answers press, I am not referring to a more complete audio recording such as that.

Can I, without offense to those involved with making the audio, copy the 3 event speakers to another disk or mp3 on a USB and give them to a few friends to keep or share with their friends? It would be to share the faith.

I am not a lawyer, but I think the organization holding the event and selling the CDs probably owns the copyright. So legally, without permission, you can loan the CD to your friends, or you can make a backup copy for yourself. Anything beyond that you would generally need permission to do.

If it’s all as informal as you describe, they might be pretty easy-going about letting you do what you want.

It’s no different from copying an entertainment CD or DVD. You don’t own the content of the discs. If you want to share the talks ethically you can either purchase more copies or request permission to make your own copies.

Your three replies up above are probably correct. Once you mentioned writing them I recalled they had a mail order form too. I just paid cash, and got no reciept. It just had a feel like buying something on the steet from a van so I got to thinking… innorrectly.

The name is probably on the disc. They are not in front of me, my friend’s wife is borrowing them first.

May God bless you for your zeal for sharing the Faith! I will pray the copyright issue is resolved.

Mary.

No.

Thank you Deacon.

I sent the CMOF offices a polite email request and will report whatever reply they send.

This is what I sent yesterday:

CMOF offices,
This past weekend I attended the Nashville area Catholic Men Of Faith Conference in Franklin TN, and bought the three instantly recorded and burned CD set of the three speakers Kevin Reilley, Tim Staples and Darrell Miller, that you made available at the end of the day. Will you grant me permission to share free copies of these on a CD which I burn from the purchased source copy or as MP3s on a USB? That is to share the faith witnessed by these speakers with those near me. Maybe I need to limit the quantity or wait some amount of time. I would be happy to comply with any restrictions you require.
Sincerely, Michael

Their reply at 4PM today,

Hello Michael,
Thank you for contacting us. Sharing the talks with those close to you is not a problem.
We agreed with the speakers to not sell CDs after the conference date.
As long as duplication is not used for mass market/marketing or sale purposes.
Thank you, Catholic Men of Faith Conf.

Thanks to everyone posting up above who helped with this question!

That sounds like the perfect solution! You’re respecting their copyright and they are being very reasonable in what they allow. That’s really nice to hear!
