If you only had the time for one, which would be better–doing the corporal work of mercy or going to daily Mass?
This, rather, is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke; Setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke;
I believe that this is what our Lord asks of us. We need the Mass to guide us, strengthen us, and renew us. But that strength and renewal is to put to use. If we love Him, we will feed His sheep.Sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; Clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own.
By going to Mass, God will open up to you the time needed to perform works of mercy.If you only had the time for one, which would be better–doing the corporal work of mercy or going to daily Mass?
But I do have time only for one. Daily Mass, or daily AA meetings. AA is my corporal work of mercy…ransoming those captive to alcohol and drugs. Going to AA keeps me sober. Without sobriety, I would be of no use to Jesus, no matter how many masses I would go to.If you only had the time for one, which would be better–doing the corporal work of mercy or going to daily Mass?
I have two friends who had serious problems with alcohol and drugs.But I do have time only for one. Daily Mass, or daily AA meetings. I do a Spiritual Communion every day.![]()
Statistical samples of one tend to be very unreliable statistical samples. I know an atheist who was 22 years sober in AA without ever going to church. Me. I also know many alcoholic Catholic Priests who would agree on the importance of AA meetings.I have two friends who had serious problems with alcohol and drugs.

Well, I do hope it works for you. Very sincerely.In the end, I prefer to go to daily AA and weekly mass, plus my 1221 lifestytle. Plus my 3 cats who remind me that I am not the center of the Universe, they are![]()
Well, my sobriety date is 17 March, 1984. Yes, St. Patrick’s Day:shamrock2:Well, I do hope it works for you. Very sincerely.
Direct application of the Good Samaritan story. “It is not the one who cries ‘Lord, Lord’ who will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of the Father.”A year ago I got out of my taxi outside of Church to go to Sunday Mass only to find a man injured in the street. The taxi driver and myself helped the man and called an ambulance. The man was bleeding severely and the taxi driver and I took turns to stem the bleeding and keep him in good spirits.
As we were with the man lots of people passed by who were on their way to Mass too. Some offered help, some walked on, but one stopped and said to me ‘Come on Mass is about to start, you’ll be late’ I couldn’t believe what I heard. I looked at the woman and said ‘This man’s need is more important than me being on time for the Mass’. The ambulance came shortly after, the taxi driver and I went to wash the blood from ourselves in the Parish toilets and I was 5 minutes late for Mass, I came in just at the end of the entrance hymn.
Go to Mass when you can, do works of mercy as they come to you or as you can. Whenever possible, do both!
