Very interesting. The drawing by St. John seems very crude. But the same idea seems to be present in both images. Oddly, if you look at the bottom of Dali’s image, there is a man and a boat?
I just took a look at St. John of the Cross’ sketch . . . nails, blood and agony are apparent. It would appear Dali’s intent was to take the suffering out of the Cross, perhaps?
Well I don’t know if it was his intention . . . I was simply making a guess that could be totally wrong. The description on the web site I linked talks about this a little:
the perspective from the Father is the same on both
St. John’s depiction is of the suffering servant, Dali’s comes across more like a “Greek God” - in their opinion.
