Correct Bible/Software

I am very new to the Roman Catholic Faith. I would like to purchase the correct version of the bible to bring with me to RCIA and mass. Can you please let me know which version this would me. Also, is there like 13 additional books the Catholics use? Please advise. If there could be a digital version, I would prefer that over paper.

Also, I use a BlackBerry smart phone and BlackBerry playbook tablet. Is there any apps that anyone can recommend to use to further my growing as a Catholic. I would prefer the apps be on the tablet due to size of the screen.

And BB app… I’m also searching for some, but I know there is one for the order of mass (Novus Ordo) called Communio
 
The previous post lists some older traditional Catholic versions of the Bible.

The hardcopy version that I’d recommend is the Ignatius Study Bible (New Testament only). the Old Testament study bible is still being developed.

This is a useful version that give very helpful Catholic-oriented notes and explanations.

The translation that it uses is the Revised Standard Version - Second Catholic Edition.

You’d have to check with Ignatius Press for an electronic version – haven’t heard of it or seen it in their catalog.

The RSV-2CE is a modernized version of the American Standard Bible, which, in turn, was a modernized version of the King James Bible.

The library of books available in electronic form is expanding so quickly that you’re on your own to find it at a source like Amazon.com, for example.
 
For authentic Catholic goodness, use the Douey-Rheims. You’ll soon see that it being “old” is nonsense. With a few exceptions in the old testament, you’ll find its no more difficult to read than the KJV. But if the older language is indeed a big deal, use the RSV-CE2 (second catholic edition) also often refered to as 2CE. However, I think every Catholic ought to have a DR in their home, if not in arm’s reach 🙂

As to the suggestion to bring the Ignatius Catholic study bible to mass and RCIA… its a huge study bible, in reality its a commentary, I don’t see any practical reason to lug that to mass, maybe RCIA but even that seems a bit impractical.

Also, there is an electronic version for the RSVCE2 and the ignatius study bible but I don’t know if there are blackberry versions (kindle and iphone have them).
 
I agree with James, again. :eek: The KJV is the protestant Bible. You’ll have to ask them why they threw out several books of the Bible and changed many passages within the books they kept.

I like the Douay Rheims Bible but shy away from the New American Bible. That is a topic that has been “hashed” over on this forum before. The RSV-2CE isn’t bad. Even my wife has dropped it in favor of the DR.
 
Are you looking for Kindle or Epub? No need to worry about the size of the Ignatius Study Bible if you are going digital. As mentioned only the New Testament is available at this time. I would highly recommend that. I don’t see the Revised Standard 2nd Edition available on Kindle but that is the Catholic Bible I would recommend anyway. Get it on hard copy. The Douay Rheims is available for Kindle for .99 cents so get that also.
 
To be fair, the Douay-Rheims as it was published in starting in 1582 wasn’t quite as easy to read as the Douay-Rheims-Challoner version, translated starting in 1749 - the latter being the one most of us use today. Still, it’s not all that difficult either. I’ll type the first few verses from Genesis here from an old scan I found online:

In the beginning God created heauen earth. And the earth was void and vacant and darkenes was vpon the face of the depth: and the Spirit of God moued ouer the waters. And God ſaid: Be light made. And light was made. And God ſaw the light that it was good: and he diuided the light from the darkenes. And he called the light, Day, and the darkenes, Night: and there was euening & morning, that made one day. God alſo ſaid: Be a firmament made amidſt the waters: and let it diuide between waters and waters. And God made a firmament, and diuided the waters that were vnder the firmament, and thoſe that were aboue the firmament. And it was ſo done.

The Challoner revision did borrow from the KJV, but the KJV also borrowed from the 1582 D-R New Testament. Still, the D-R-C doesn’t have the same problems that you’d face in the KJV.

They’re both available for Kindle, but they’re listed simply as the “Ignatius Bible”:

Ignatius Study Bible

And definitely get a Kindle copy of the DR (if that’s your ereader)! Can’t go wrong for 99 cents.
