G’day,

Just curious. I was wondering about the correct way to recieve Communion? I have been reading into the Fatima story and I found that Mary or the Angel that appeared to the children showed them how to take Communion correctly. This was done by the Eucharist being placed on the tongue by the ‘Priest’. Is this correct, or am I reading into this incorrectly? I have been taught that both recieving the Eucharist in the hands or on the tongue are both acceptable, but if Mary has given us the correct way, shouldn’t we be doing it that way?

Thanks! 👍

Mary was speaking to those particular children, not to the Church at large. There is no more public revelation; see CCC 67

So does this mean she was only telling them how to recieve it correctly? Wouldn’t this mean she wasn’t all of us to take it this way? If she is decscribing it as the ‘correct’ way.

I believe that at the time of the fatima revelations, this was the only licit way within the Latin rite. At that time it would have been inapropriate to recieve in the hand because it would have been disobedient to the regulations of the Church. These regulations have changed and as such it is now perfectly licit. Beyond even this one of the major reasons for this more recent change is because in the earliest church recieving in the hand was the ordinary way. Recieving in the hand is probably the most traditional method of recieving however it is up to personal opinion which is most prudent and reverent.

One thing to remember-- receiving in the hand is licit for the people in the UNITED STATES but it is NOT licit in many, if not most, other nations of the world.

In Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong it is common to receive both ways.

True. But I do believe that Portugal, for example, does not receive in the hand, but only on the tongue. In the US we may receive both ways as well, licitly. . .but in some places only the latter way is licit.

Could you cite the places where it isn’t licit?

I found this link on EWTN that gives a list of several places where reception on the tongue is licit, and when it was granted. . .

I wondered. I found this link (“Catholics United for the Faith”):
cuf.org/Faithfacts/details_view.asp?ffID=228

“Issue: When was Communion in the hand first permitted?
**Response: **In 1969 Memoriale Domini provided for the reception of Communion in the hand in limited areas and under special circumstances. Then, in the 1973 instruction Immensae Caritatis, the Church granted wider permission because many episcopal conferences had asked for permission to allow Communion in the hand.” (Emphasis mine)

According to EWTN’s list, Malaysia and Singapore requested permission in 1977 (if you look, HH Pope Paul VI had actually granted permission in 1969). I think reception in the hand is, world-wide, far more utilized than you and I have been lead to believe, but I really wish I could find a list of nations where it’s permitted. I know that it is at the Holy See, at least for the large papal masses.

Well, in any case, what is the correct way of recieving it on the tongue. Do you just reply with ‘Amen’ then open your mouth and stick out your tongue a little? Or just open your mouth? Anything else special to do? Where do your hands go etc.

Thanks crew! 👍

I am a convert of 3 years. I originally received in the hand. One day I was in line and the 2 or 3 people in front of me received on the tongue. I just went foward and did the same. I now ONLY receive on the tongue.

Licit here in the Philippines.

But I receive on the tongue. Unless the priest or EME is unusually short.
