Something Elon Musk said a few years ago is that Artificial Intelligence is a threat to humanity, on a scale like weapons of mass destruction. He called it something like “summoning the demon.” A materialist, obviously he didn’t literally mean what he said. But I was wondering (as I tend to do sometimes on a lazy Sunday): could demons “possess” robots and use them against us? Would God allow this as a consequence of our hubris?

Just following this post to see where it goes. I would have thought that as robots do not have souls, they cannot be possessed by demons, but I note the inverted commas around the word “possess” in the OP.

Fascinating question. My daughter is an engineer, (computer and electrical engineering) and said robots WOULD be able to be programmed to do a lot of different things, etc., but indeed as Matt 241 said they do not have souls.

Therefore, I believe the demons could use humans to use these robots for in ways not pleasing to God.

Yeah I guess it wouldn’t be like possession of people, but I thought, since Jesus sent a legion of demons into a bunch of pigs, that demons could infest animals and maybe other things, too (though it didn’t seem like they could do much but drown the pigs).

Good point about programming. Since AI wouldn’t actually have free will, any evil would have to be in its design. Just running its program would be amoral. Probably why animals aren’t targets of possession, either (are they?)

Demonic entities have been known to affect electronic equipment. If a machine were created that allowed humans to control it with their mind, I suppose a demon could access that same interface.

I’m pretty sure a demon has gotten into my remote once or twice before. I’m always losing it.

Certainly inanimate objects such as AI can have a demon attached to it and can inflict harm through it. This occurs when the object is cursed (opposite to the Grace and Blessing) through the permission of the one who has rights over the object.
