To avoid denominalization of the Church, couldn’t have Jesus and the Apostles had been clearer in scripture???on all issues???

I was asked this question by my 10 year old nephew.

I responded by telling him that niether Jesus nor the apostles intended the gospel Truth to be fully disminated by only a book. In fact they did not even consider writing a New Testament till years after the Resurection.

Curious as to how the question would be/should be answered.

I agree with you. The bible is not a faith manual or a catechism. In fact, considering how unclear the bible is in many areas, my personal belief is that God intentionally made sure it was not too clear when read outside of the Church. Yes, God and the Apostles could have made it clearer to help avoid denominationalism, but denominationalism is exactly one of the penalties to be paid for leaving the Church. What they regard as their freedom is actually their curse, because freedom to disbelieve the truth is no blessing. It is the modern-day story of Babel.

Note too that even when the bible is quite clear, such as the necessity of baptism, or the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, people still twist those passages to mean their opposite.

auhsoj88,

Actually, I don’t think they could have been clear enough to avoid “denominalization.” It is my experience that Sola Scriptura believers tend either to distort or simply to ignore those verses or passages of Scripture that they disagree with. For example, …
  • When Jesus says in John 6 that we need to eat (munch, chomp, gnaw) on His Body, this is interpreted to mean that we are to meditate on His teachings.
  • When Jesus says in John 17:12 that He guarded His disciples and none of them was lost except the son of perdition, that means that none of His disciples was lost.
  • When Jesus tells Simon bar-Jona “you are Rock (Peter), and on this rock I will build My Church,” the “rock” refers either to Peter’s confession or else to Jesus Himself.
  • When Paul says in Romans 11:23 that we see “God’s kindness towards you–provided you remain in his kindness; otherwise you too will be cut off” this means that it is impossible for a person to lose his salvation.
When you run into this sort of misunderstanding of clear teachings, it is difficult to figure out how Jesus and the Apostles could have made it clearer.

We’d always have splinters. Even when Jesus was there Judas didn’t believe the message and rebelled against it.

Even when the Jews had a highly comprehensive legalistic set-up, they’d still find trouble

If Jesus wanted it to be 100% clear He would be here in the flesh every day. God could do that. But He chooses not to, so we are forced to make a choice. That is faith!!

Do you think all the bad stuff in the world would be happening if Jesus was here in the flesh right now? Of course not. But God doesn’t want our love on those terms.

Montalban,

I realize this is off-topic, but is your signature Gaelic for “Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee”?

And if I may pry further, you’re a long way from home, aren’t you?

The Mosaic Law was pretty darn clear, and yet you still had the Pharisees and the Sadducees (and a few others as well).

God Bless,

Could God have been any clearer when he said DO NOT eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil?

Jesus and the Apostles were very clear. Man is prideful and sinful.

Well.

If the gospel had recorded Jesus saying “I will start the Catholic Church headed by the pope”, it would have made things a whole lot easier.

😃

As 1ke pointed out, Jesus did clearly say he’d build his church upon Peter. The problem (if anything) wasn’t Jesus not being clear, it was 1) human language being naturally creative and adaptive causing an evolution of word usage, 2) the natural necessity for more distinct words to be employed as the Church grew, and 3) ridiculous Protestant implicit demands that #1 and #2 not exist.

Really, what would it take for a die-hard Protestant to believe Peter and all the Popes were what Jesus was referring to? Would we have to call them all “Rock” and ONLY “Rock”? In their “logic,” if the word wasn’t in the Bible, God couldn’t have meant it. Something makes me think that even if we only referred to the Pope as “The Rock,” Protestants would still have an issue and call us pagan stone worshippers. :banghead:

If the spirit of protest is there, there is nothing you can do to make sense to them. And, if the spirit of protest isn’t there, a simple reading of those 4 verses and a brief 3 pages of scholarship and history proving how the Catholic Church believes what Peter believed, should clear it up.

In “The Church” the ARE NO DENOMINATIONS. Jesus prayer for his followers to be one is efficaccious since He is God and it is His Will.

The “Church” of “Jesus” IS - it IS the Catholic Church!
