I was raised Catholic, but did not truly believe in Christ until I was evangelized in college at a Campus Crusade for Christ outreach. My evangelist taught me that I needed to repent of all my sins and “receive Jesus as my personal Lord and Savior.” When I did what he said after much soul searching, I finally came to believe in and love the Lord.
That was 15 years ago, and I have long since become the faithful Catholic I was meant to be. When asked, “Why?” by my evangelical friends, I tell them that the more bible literate I became, the more my heart was opened to the fullness of Catholic truth and less to Calvinist teaching.
Yet, I can not excape the fact that my own conversion at the hands of an Evangelical’s witness was so effective and fruitful, and that as a result I prefer to use the Campus Crusade method in my own witness to nonbelievers. I have found tracts by Billy Graham loaded with bible verses that present the gospel in a non-sectarian manner, but I have not found any Catholic tracts that invite others to “receive Christ” like that. Does this mean that guiding one to repent and “recieve Christ into your heart as your personal Lord and Savior” is incompatable with Catholic teaching?
