I’m wondering if rap could be a sin because most of the rap songs are about disrespecting women and other people?

Nope. “Most” rap is not about that. Most of the junk they play on the radio and call rap is about that. Listen to someone like Common, Mos Def, and Talib Kweli (who has a whole song dedicated to the births of his children and how much he loves his wife). 2Pac had songs about why we need to respect women more. In one he says “Why do we take from our women, why do we rape our women, do we hate our women?”
Common is a devout Muslim and has the utmost respect for women in his songs and writes a lot of really good love songs (check out “The Light”). Not only that, but he made an anti-abortion song with Lauryn Hill called “Retrospective for Life”. Plus, he made a song called “G.O.D. (Gaining One’s Definition)” about religion. In that song he says:

“My mind has delt with the books of Zen, Tao,
the Lessons Qu’ran and the Bible,
to me they all vital and got truth within 'em
gotta read them boys, you just cant skim 'em
different branches of belief, but one root that stems 'em
but people of the venom try to trim 'em
and use religion as an emblem
when it should be a natural way of life
who am I or they to say to whom you pray aint right?
That’s what’s got you doin right and got you this far
whether you say ‘in Jesus name’ or ‘Alhum du Allah’
long as you know it’s a being that’s supreme to you
you let that show towards others and the things you do…”

In “Retrospective for Life” he says:
“Knowing you’re the best part of life do I have the right to take yours
because i created you irresponsibly?”

other lines in it are:

“Had myself believing I was thorough
look at your mother’s stomach and wonder if you are a boy or girl
turnin this woman’s womb into a tomb, but she and i agreed
and see, we dont believe you woulda been much more than a mouth to feed
but someone I woulda fed this information I read
but someone, my life for you I woulda had to lead
instead i led you to death
I’m sorry for taking your first step, first breath and first cry”

“the nerve I got to talk 'bout them niggas with a gun
must have really thought I was God to take the life of my son”

“From now on I’ma use self control instead of birth control
cause three hundred and fifteen dollars aint worth your soul”

Mos Def (a good friend of Talib Kweli) is also in that song with Talib Kweli that I mentioned about his kids. Through the song they talk about how much they love their families and in the chorus he says “I know how you feel, I said I know how you feel. Kweli, I know how you feel.”
So you see, there is some REALLY good rap out there. You just won’t hear it on the radio.

Music in itself is not a bad thing. It all depends on the lyrics. So to clarify my earlier response, if the lyrics are about killing, having sex, etc… they are going to be sinful to listen to. However if the lyrics are not disrespectful it is perfectly fine to listen to them. The same can be true with any other type of music. Hope this helps.

What I think is a sin is that they call “Rap” music in the first place.

I don’t listen to them and can’t understand the words when I hear them in pass-bys, but when I see the lyrics printed every now and then when someone is doing an expose, WOW, some of them seem like occasions of sin for those who play and listen to them over and over.

Rap is not music, and I think it is a sin even if the “music” is not about treating other people poorly.

I think when anyone takes a gift that God gives them to glorify evil (killing, rape, using women, illicit sex, etc etc etc) is committing a grave sin. (And not only rappers do it.) What makes me even more irritated is when those same people thank God for their success at award shows.

I enjoyed the lyrics you shared, Rand Al’Thor. Those really made me think. 🙂

Like all kinds of pop music - there are songs with good lyrics and songs with bad lyrics. Heck, some of the songs by the Beatles and Rolling Stones are pretty disrespectful toward women, or celebrate drug use or immoral behavior. Come to think of it, lots of people dismissed Elvis and rock’n’roll as noisy sinful cacaphony - definitely not music!
