Could someone help me find some quotes?

I was walking out of the dining hall at my school with some of my friends. One of them, a non-Christian, offered me a cookie, “Lent,” I replied shaking my head. It started out with an inquiry about why I celebrated Lent. Fair enough. After I told him that I gave of sweets, sacrificed something, so that I could be better able to reflect on Christ’s sacrifice, understand his love and work to change myself, the conversation rapidly progressed to how the Catholic Church didn’t exist until the 500’s (I tried to explain that the Church was made up of the successors of Peter, but I didn’t get anywhere), how there are more than five books in the New Testament (He thought that the Gospel of John, the three Letters of John and the Revelation to John were all one book) and how he thinks that Jesus never claimed to be God. It is with this last assertion that I would like help finding Biblical quotes. It’s the simplest, so I thought that I would focus on building credibility with that and work my way up to harder issues. I know that there’s John 10:30, but what other ones are there?

Rather than letting him ask you all the questions, you should ask him a few. Find out what Christian persuasion he identifies with and ask him about his Bible translation. Ask him how he knows what he does and then get him to substantiate his assertions. You could probably use an ordinary history textbook to refute that the Catholic Church existed well before the 500s. But it’s not your job to. Let him show you, himself, how he came about those assertions.

I’m not sure John 10:30 is going to be of very much help to you, by the way. What kind of quotes are you looking for?

I’ve never heard that the writings of John were all one work at some point. I’ve heard a theory that 1 John served as a kind of cover letter for the gospel but 2 & 3 John are addressed to two different people. Why would they have been part of one book?

As far as the Catholic Church not existing until the 500s, I’ve heard that before and it is simply not true. St. Ignatius of Antioch refers to the Catholic Church in his Letter to the Smyrnaeans 8, written between 105 and 110 AD.

I would suggest making your friend do the proving.

He was crucified for claiming to be God. Would anyone do that if he could explain that his accusers were mistaken?

Of course, your classmate will try to wiggle out of these quotes somehow. People who don’t want to accept what’s right in front of them usually do, but there’s no harm in trying. Just be prepared for him to try to pooh-pooh these quotes.

He doesn’t identify with any Christian persuasion. He’s a Jew (I think).

As for what I’m looking for, I’m focusing on showing that Christ did in fact say that he was God so in need quote where Jesus says things to that effect.
 
Give him the CA Pillar of Fire Pillar of Truth pamphlet (can be printed off the website).

Sounds like the infinite string of questions built around the false God / false Church argument.

There is no easy way to deal with the endless lies and false claims of these people except to present the Truth, which is Jesus Christ.

Remember, it is not your job to win the argument, just give them the Truth and they must chose to accept it or to deny it. Sow the seed, spread the Gospel!

“When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil {one} comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is the one on whom seed was sown beside the road.” Mt 13:19
