The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest.

Was this something that was set up when it was necessary to have a bishop’s approval to use the old Mass?

Is it canonical, schismatic?

They are most definately not schismatic. They are a society of apostolic life that are of Pontifical Rite. They (along with the FSSP) have been recommended upon many times by the Pope, and yes they were set up when priests needed approval from the Bishop to pray the TLM.

Hello At Trent,

That link inspired the question 🙂 It seems that the US head quarters is in Chicago, yet they are under the Archdioceses of Florence. I sensed some possible associations or possible mis-associations with SSPX.

I looked at some of their links, have been looking for a Tridentine Mass in the midwest, and it seems as though some parishes are “under” the “care” of this institute.

I do not understand the structure here.

Happy Easter, SP

Thanks, LoyalViews. That’s good news.

On the Feast of The Triumph of The Cross in 2008 (i think), the ICKSP celebrated Mass (TLM) in Mother Angelica`s “Temple”. Stunning!

Dear skinny_pumpkin,

ICRSS loves and is totally devoted to the Church and our dear Holy Father! 🙂 If you are fortunate to have one of their apostolates nearby, have no hesitation going. They are a young group, and they give me hope for the future. Their seminary is so bursting at the seams that they’ve asked for extra prayers to St. Joseph to be able to have more space for them before classes begin. One can also support them by donating to their seminary fund.

Other posters have mentioned the Mass they celebrated for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. I have never attended a High Mass in person, but when I saw this on EWTN, I was absolutely astounded. Oh my, such incredible reverence I’d never imagined. This indeed is the Mass so many of my patrons saints knew and celebrated. It is available on the Religious Catalogue:

Happy Easter, everyone!

Short answer, Orders of priests are not restricted on a territorial basis.

They are nor affiliated with the SSPX.

Have a Blessed Eastertide 🙂

Youve never attended a TLM Solemn High Mass in person? Go out and find one! A video is far better than nothing......but to be in the middle of it! You feel drawn into the very heart of the Church; and you imagine that you can feel Its heartbeat. You realise that the Church is strong and healthy and indestructible. You need extra tissues to dry your eyes, and clear your nose. Its a pity a lot of people are frightened off because they know little or no Latin: you just let it flow through you and over you. Soak it up!

ive had the good fortune of being able to get to a Solemn High Mass (FSSP) every Sunday for the past 18 months (gloat!). Its the young people, more than the older people, who are attracted to it. There are many more toddlers than walking sticks. Its future is secure.

Enough poetry.

The Institute, often known by their latin acronym ICRSS, for Institutum Christi Regis Summi Sacerdotis, is a papally established order of priests and religious, nominally assigned to the care of the Archbishop of Florence, Italy, since he welcomed their mother house; the society is, however, actually independent of His Eminence, electing a superior general according to their constitution. His Eminence, however, also granted them, as an order operating within his see, their special distinctive choir dress (which serves as a habit).

They were established in 1990, for mostly the same purpose as the SSPX had been: to preserve the pre-vatican II praxis.

All their priests are trained for the 1962 missal, now called the EF or Extraordinary Form, but also all are familiarized with the OF (ordinary form) missal.

They have, however, maintained fidelity to the magisterium and the pope. They are canonical and non-schismatic, and are valid and licit.

A parish staffed by the ICRSS is a diocesan parish of the local Roman Rite diocese. The bishop has asked (and made pay arrangements for) the ICRSS to provide priests (and sometimes also deacons) to staff those parishes for him. The Society then operates that parish per the terms of the contract.

Such assignments are nothing terribly unusual; the Franciscan and Dominican friary orders often accept such contracts, provided community living can be maintained and the particular house’s charism is compatible. Jesuits also take such assignments, tho not always in community. Other orders also do so in varying situations and with certain restrictions. It just isn’t obvious when its not a group with a distinctive vesture and/or habit.

The ICRSS have, like the franciscans and dominicans, adopted a system of multiple different sub-orders: they have their ordained society of priests and deacons, and it’s “novices” are seminarians; they have a sub-society of oblates, who while not priests nor seminarians, assist the society in its duties, and another of nuns who do likewise, and a “third order” (tho not called such) for laity who wish to become affiliated with them. Further, many priests remain diocesan priests of their home diocese, but take training from the Institute, and may even be awarded symbols of that affiliation, without formally being under the order’s incardination.

Oh, how I’d love to! 🙂 But with regard to the EF, I live in a comparative wasteland here in So. Cal. Still, I support ICRSS b/c I appreciate the good they do, even though I can’t attend their apostolates. They and others give me a fresh hope for the future.

How fortunate you are! Please keep me in your prayers that I could one day say the same.

Take care,
