Could you please explain Mary and Revelation 12?

When did the Catholic Church’s interpretation of the “woman clothed in the sun” referred to in Revelation 12 as being Mary first show up? Please provide references (Early Church Fathers, Popes. ??) I need to address a Protestant bible study, which is interpreting that passage as referring to the Church or Israel…no reference at all to Mary.
