So at the council of Nicea which was brought together under Emporer Conatantine about the arian Heresy. I understand that the New Testament was added to the bible. now correct me if I’m wrong but to get all of the information for Romans,Corinthians,the Gospels, revelation, the acts of the apostles.People had to some digging to get copies for the council.
If you think about it each separate writing was probably spread out over a large area because people were using the books for worship.
 
The gospels, Paul’s letter, the Catholic epistles, Revelation, and other books were read from liturgically in masses/divine liturgies before Nicea. Copies would have been widespread and in use throughiut Christendom. It may not be as easy as it is now to have obtained copies, but I also don’t imagine it was extraordinary trouble to bring copies to various councils. Actually, I think it was later councils that settled disputes about the canon. It’s a bit oversimplistic to say that they added the new testament to the Bible, but yes, the Old and New Testament scriptures were agreed upon.
 
Is it known where the original texts that were the basis for the new testament in the bible are?
 
This was a very insightful video that had alot of good information on and plus the person speaking was funny at times. The biggest thing though is even though we dont have the original manuscripts of the new testament the message in all the copies is still the same.
Even though there might be differences in wording. I think this is because of the fact that the new testament was translated into a language such as English where certain words just might not exist. Even with the old ones there are so many copies from so many different authors that they are bound to have some sort of textural differences. The thing I found kind of interesting though was how we a certain passage in revelation that marks the best with the number “666”, but in one of the earlier texts that were written had the mark of the beast as “616”, and others supported it with the same number. Now do we know for certain if this is true we don’t. I think i’ts up for much speculation and debate.

I also found the speakers story of the “person who wanted to copy down texts and each text that he wanted to copy down in some way shape or form slightly varied from one another and so he would go to small rooms to try and decipher and copy them down and every time there was a discrepency. Then the last, and final room that he was taken to which was locked had some very early texts and the guy started crying because it was missing an r”(wallace). I think that the importance of this sort of parable is to say that most if not all new testament texts today are going to have some differences within them.
 
It’s not the real heart of the thread, but the New Testament canon did not get assembled at Nicea.

There were several local synods prior that discussed it, the synod of hippo being one of them, later the Council of Carthage debated the issue.

One of the tools used to determine what should be in the canon was, “is this writing used by the faithful in mass”. If it was read in mass regularly then that was considered. This demonstrates the writings were widespread.
