Before I read the documents of the Council of Trent, is there anything that can help me get a clear understanding of their context? I’ve seen numerous citations from the documents recently, that really look rather uncharitable. Unfortunately, these are citations that are just pulled out to prove specific points – like that all non-Catholics are going to h-e-double hockey sticks. I’d like to read them myself but want some guidance.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Southern Sister,

Probably your best bet would be a secular history book with a chapter on the reformation. Such a book would probably be equally (un)sympathetic to both Catholicism and Protestantism–and has the best chance of being balanced. I think a high school text would give you enough background.

I have a general knowledge of the subject–nothing very detailed–and simply plunged into the “Canons and Decrees of the Council of Trent.” I don’t know that you need anything more than a vague notion of the “context” in order to be able to get a lot out of them.

How about going to Wikipedia for a start?

Hi Sis,

Your best best would probably be the Catholic Encyclopedia. Click here, then on “t” then choose “Trent.”

The Council of Trent was called to respond to the Protestant “Reformation”. Those were tough times and nobody minced words.
