AP - A Maine couple upset that their 19-year-old daughter was pregnant tied her up, loaded her in their car and began driving to New York to force her to get an abortion, police said.
The daughter, Katelyn Kampf, escaped Friday at a shopping center and called police, who arrested her parents, Nicholas Kampf, 54, and Lola, 53, of North Yarmouth, Maine. They were jailed on a kidnapping charge and were being held on $100,000 bail each.

The parents were scheduled to be arraigned in Salem District Court. A call to attorney Mark Sisti was not immediately returned.

“Her parents chased her out into the yard, grabbed and tied her hands and feet together,” Salem Police Officer Sean Marino wrote in a court affidavit. “Katelyn states that her father then carried her to their car and they headed toward New Hampshire.”

Investigators said rope, duct tape, scissors and a .22-caliber rifle were found in the Kampfs’ Lexus and Nicholas Kampf had a loaded .22- caliber magazine clip in his pants pocket.

I think attempted murder charges should be made too.

I just saw this. How crazy.

The ironic thing is the quote:
“Katelyn stated to me that upon her parents finding out that she was pregnant, they told her she had no choice but to get an abortion,” Marino wrote in his court affidavit.
So much for pro-choice being for choice

Initial reports here in New England stated they were trying to STOP her from having an abortion. My husband and I were confused, but the affidavit clears it up.

This is an extreme case.

I think more cases of subtle or unpublicised cases are waaay more common.

Exactly what is coercion and force? Obviously this was a clear example. But what about just plain parental pressure? The fear of parents can be a form of coercion. A boyfriend implying that he can’t or won’t care for a child can be manipulative.

How many boyfriends just tell the girl to get in and go to the clinic?

How many mothers say, “You live here in my house, this is what will happen”?

How many women are taunted, haunted and threatened into aborting?

Abortion is a desparate act, not one of choice but of no choice.

I read a quite a few post abortive stories from women on line, usually the person who comes to the clinic to support her, is really there to insure that she actually goes through with the procedure.

What’s really sad is that these parents will probably walk away with a slap on the wrist.

If you read David Reardon’s “aborted women, silent no more”
many young women stated that they were pressured or forced by there parents to have an abortion. Maybe they weren’t forced at gunpoint, but they were told they had no “choice” or they would be kicked out, disowned, ect.

Chapter one talks about coerced abortion.

I hope these parents(of the 19 year old woman) are prosecuted to the whole extent of the law.

UGH, I want to puke right now.

They just showed those parents sprawled out fancy mansion on TV. How sick. As if they couldn’t afford to allow that poor baby to live.

I’m so sick and tired of people’s selfishness. I can “almost” understand a desperate family with limited income stressing over how to support a baby, but these people had no excuse!

This is obviously an extreme case and these parents should be prosecuted to every extent possible! As to more subtle pressures, that goes both ways, I’ve also heard of girls being told by their parents that if they have an abortion they’re out of the house. About 10,000 girls a year come to IL to have an abortion because there is currently no parental notification law enforcement; obviously in those cases there is no parental pressure to abort.

"A Maine couple accused of kidnapping their 19-year-old daughter and trying to force her to get an abortion was upset because the baby’s father is black, a Maine sheriff said.

Katelyn Kampf, who is white, told Cumberland County Sheriff Mark Dion that her mother “was pretty irate at the fact that the child’s father was black, and she had made a number of disparaging remarks about that,” he said Tuesday.

Dion said Katelyn Kampf told him her parents got upset when she called them Thursday night and told them she was pregnant. The Kampfs had met her boyfriend before and been friendly, but the pregnancy apparently “changed the dynamic,” he said.

Katelyn Kampf said her mother “kept referring to the baby as a thing, as ‘It,’ and there were other comments made,” he said.

They invited Katelyn, who is living in Portland with her boyfriend’s mother, to come to their house Friday morning. Dion would not say whether the Kampfs were already prepared to abduct their daughter when she arrived.

The boyfriend, 22-year-old Reme Johnson, last week began serving a 6-month theft sentence at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn, Maine. McFarland also asked the judge to issue protective orders for Johnson, his mother, Peggy, and his sister, Renee.

Johnson pleaded guilty to one count of receiving stolen property. Lewiston, Maine, police arrested him last year after they stopped a car he was in and found two stolen handguns, the Portland Press Herald reported. Johnson also has previous felony convictions for burglary and receiving stolen property.

Johnson and Katelyn Kampf had been dating for about two years, maintaining the relationship after she graduated with honors from a private prep school and attended Boston College, Dion said.

Because their daughter had been pregnant a while, the Kampfs apparently thought an abortion should be performed in New York, although New York law does not appear to offer a clear advantage to Maine’s."

Ok, they send their child to Boston College, a Catholic college, but force her to get an abortion?
