Court marriage & church marriage

My fiancé and I are moving to Costa Rica 3 days after our planned catholic wedding (July 28) the only problem is that we need to be legally married for our spousal visa to work. HR suggested we get married at the courthouse ASAP. Does anyone know if this would affect our catholic marriage? Or would this even be allowed? Any and all insight would be appreciated!

You can have one marriage, either church or courtroom; the court one would require dispensation of form from the Church (bishop). Maybe see if you can have your nuptials in church sooner? You can always have a small wedding as soon as your priest is ready and then a reception with family and friends on the July date.

Speak to your pastor. Under the circumstances he may grant a dispensatio. If he can’t I don’t see any issue with a civil marriage provided you don’t have relations until you can marry in the Church. Again your pastor can advise.

Please talk to your pastor. You are going to get inaccurate information here on this forum. If you are both Catholic, there is no such thing as a dispensation from Catholic form. If one of you is Catholic, it is possible for a dispensation from Catholic form. But it sounds like you already have a Catholic wedding planned, so a dispensation isn’t really what you are looking for.

You should talk to your pastor, because it is possible for you to be married legally and live separately Until your Catholic marriage. At which time your Catholic marriage would actually be what most people would call a convalidation.

This is something to talk with your pastor about. Explain the requirements of the visas and the timing of everything and see if he can come up with a solution for you.
