Yes, you can cover the statues and crusifix during Holy week, but your not suppost to before that.

I don’t think your supposed to it until after the Last Supper Service when Jesus leaves the tabernacle that is when a period of mourning occurs because Jesus has left us. Then it is appropriate for the absense of holy water and statues to be covered. However some churches have abused this legitamate practice and during the enire lenten season leave the faithful without sacramentals and the icons they love.

Wrong. the Church permits the covering of statues, crucifix, etc from the 4th sunday of lent onward… (or maybe its the 5th)

Then its the last week of lent this is permitted and not the entire lenten season that some looney parishes insiste on doing.

My looney parish does it all through Lent. And I love it. I remember it being done when I was a kid.

I think I misunderstood this poll. I thought it was what you would prefer not what is now allowed.

I remember as a child the statues being covered. It made lent more somber and Easter more anticipated.

Well, our church, before the new Pastor and silly associate came, used to cover all statues throughout the entirty of Lent, leaving only a life-size statue of the crucifix hanging above the alter to remain uncovered, reminding us of the season… however, this has since been changed…

This Sunday was the 3rd or 4th Sunday that all statues and crucifixes were covered. We have a very traditional parish.

I feel that covering the statues etc. during lent make the glory of Easter much more beautiful. It also brings to mind the sacrifice that our Lord took upon Himself to save us.

I did have a question if someone might know, I have been going to this church for just a year and don’t remember last Palm Sunday, but I noticed that the priest were a red chasuble today. Is this common?

Yes, red is the color worn for Palm Sunday.

As long as you uncover a crucifix for the celebration of daily Mass, when or if it’s celebrated.

A parish here has covered everything for the entire duration of Lent as well as removing the Holy Water. This means that no crucifix has been available “on or near the altar” for ANY Mass all of Lent.

Here is your answer as to why the cross and statues are covered:

The crosses are veiled because Christ during this time no longer walked openly among the people, but hid himself. Hence in the papal chapel the veiling formerly took place at the words of the Gospel: “Jesus autem abscondebat se.” Another reason is added by Durandus, namely that Christ’s divinity was hidden when he arrived at the time of His suffering and death. The images of the saints also are covered because it would seem improper for the servants to appear when the Master himself is hidden (Nilles, “Kal.”, II, 188).

It is also forbidden to remove Holy Water. The Holy Water fonts should be empty only from completion of Mass on Holy Thursday through Good Friday and Holy Saturday.
