What are some crafts that have a connection to faith or morals?

The Amish make furniture, have traditional farms and likely relate them directly to their faith…do Catholics have any cottage industries per se anywhere?

Catholics have always had a strong tradition of religious art, depicting various Biblical scenes, as well as the saints. Of course this tradition goes back to the time when most people could not read, so art was one of the big ways in which people learned Bible stories.

I have been thinking about doing some religious art myself, as a form of meditation, sort of like a prayer. I am an amateur, and I’m not sure my skills are really up to the task (I have some talent but I’m no Michelangelo), but I think it could make for a more worthwhile subject than yet another bowl of fruit. I do have some hesitation, but I figure if the prayers of someone who’s inarticulate are still worthy, than my own modest depiction of a Biblical scene or concept will be worthy too. What matters is I humble myself and glorify God, and not make the art itself my idol.

In our parish, some people knit scarves and hats for the homeless…others knit squares for baby blankets. Some make rosaries for those in need as well. It’s not so much the craft has a moral basis, but how it!s being put to use that brings faith!

Good Luck with your endeavors!
