From the Catechism:

2301…The Church permits cremation, provided that it does not demonstrate a denial of faith in the resurrection of the body.

Cremation is allowed when a proper burial is not possible due to practical or financial reasons. The ashes must, however, be interred in a container and buried (either in the ground or at sea). The scattering of ashes is not permitted as it is contrary to the dignity of the human body.
