Where does the church stand on cremation? Do the ashes have to be buried or can they be scattered over a selected area?

They must be buried as one would a casket with the body.

Cremation is acceptable if standard burial is not possible due to financial or other reasons. The ashes of the deceased must be buried. They can be committed to the sea, provided they are placed in a suitable container to keep them from scattering. The scattering of ashes is not considered respectful or proper by the Church.

In addition, the desire or need for cremation MUST NOT originate from a denial of bodily resurrection.
The Church had a general condemnation of cremation because several heretical groups that used the practice specifically as a denial of the resurrection.

That heresy has, fortunately, lapsed. And, as such, the Church permits cremation for economic, health or reasons of civil law.
