My wife and I have an 18 mo old daughter and one due in March. 18 mo old has a hollow wooden cross with flowers on it hanging in her room. As I am doing the new baby;s room I am considering putting crucifixes in both of thier rooms. I am not talking about a 6 foot Jesus looming over the cribs. But just a nice decorative crucifix. Any thoughts? Is one more spiritually effective than the other?

I like a nice Crucifix myself. I can’t really say why but I especially like the kind that comes with the supplies for the annointing of the sick. Just my preference though-😉

I too prefer to have a Crucifix instead of a Cross. It is more of a holy reminder for me to have the image of Jesus on the Cross. 🙂

how about a holy water font at their level by the door, with a nice crucifix attached.

I like the crucifix too. In fact, DH and I had received enough from our wedding and things previous to it, that we have one up in each room. It’s a constant reminder for us :).

I agree with everyone else, I must prefer a crucifix to a cross.

I loved the idea of the holy water font, but wouldn’t young children be inclined to play in it?

God bless!

Trish

I remember as a child loving to just sit and stare at the crucifix. I think that children are so much more accepting of the Holy Sacrifice than most adults.

I would think that having a crucifix in their room would be the best idea as well as a holy water font.

I like the suggestions I haven’t thought of a holy water font but maybe that would be nice as well. My wife isn’t really warm to the idea of replacing the crosses with crucifixes. But as in all cases of 8 month pregnant women decorating a babys room she has the final say.

There’s so little water in it, it isn’t that big of a deal. In addition, one could put a cut-down sponge in there to hold the holy water. I do it to try to keep the holy water from evaporating away. And little kids LOVE to learn to bless themselves.

We placed our holy water font low enough for our two and a half year old to reach. For a while there he was the most blessed boy in the world! 😃 Maybe it had something to do with bringing him out of the terrible twos? 😃 He is now three and reminds me every night to bless him with holy water when I pray for him; he also checks that I have blessed his brothers.

I vote for a crucifix too. I clearly remember the priest who was instructing me in the faith wagging his finger and saying “Woe betide any Catholic who does not sleep underneath a crucifix!”

I’m an old Catholic, but it seems to me that that crosses have always belonged to the Protestants. Catholics have crucifixes in every Catholic church in the world. Don’t forget Jesus instituted all the Sacraments which reside in His church where He rules over them in the tabernacle. There is certainly very good arguments in favor of the crucifix. Our pastor went into a store recently and asked for a crucifix and the clerk replied “oh you want a cross with the little man on it.” Nice, huh?
