A friend told me that there is a document (though she couldn’t rememer what or by which pope) that basicly outlines the criteria for the corpus on a crucifix. It can’t show a despairing face, etc. I’m trying to locate the document and am having no luck. Anyone know anything of this??

Thnaks so much,
Gina

Nope - seen a few crucifixes in my time and they have all different styles and all different expressions on them. Wouldn’t call any of them ‘despairing’ exactly but I guess ‘despair’ is in the eye of the beholder.

I wear a 5-1/2 inch San Damiano crucifix. Colored paper glued on wood. Jesus is most certainly not despairing. Quite serene, in fact.:hmmm:

My personal criteria
  • Crossed feet
  • Loin cloth is manditory
  • The Lord can appear either dead or about to expire
  • I prefer the nails in the hands as opposed to the wrists although I know there are studies that prove this method.
  • Bloody looking corpuses are acceptable and indeed encouraged
  • He can appear in such a pitiful state so as to cause a person to be moved but no despair must be on the face.

5 1/2 inch? Is your neck strong enough? :bigyikes:
It is a cheap enough crucifix of plywood, with a paper reproduction of the San Damiano Crucifix on it. Your comment got me to actually weigh it…1/4 ounce. And that includes the shoelace I use to hold it around my neck. I’m sure St. Francis would approve the shoelace in place of a more costly metal chain:)
