I recently purchased a crucifix with a St. Benedict medal in it. I would like to have this blessed but I was unsure if it should be blessed as a crucifix or as a St. Benedict medal? Or both? I know the blessing for St. Benedict medals is specific, but since this is also a crucifix I am unsure of which blessing would be most appropriate?

I look forward to hearing your (name removed by moderator)ut on this matter. Thanks.

Trust the judgment of your priest. He’ll know what to do. 🙂

The St Benedict medal should be blessed according to the blessing for St. Benedict Medals, and the crucifix should be blessed using the blessing for the crucifix. Be forewarned, this is a lengthy blessing and some priest may be tempted to take shortcuts. According to the Roman Ritual (as opposed to the Book of Blessings, which the CDF has been going through again because of certain issues), the St. Benedict medal blessing alone takes close to 10 minutes, but it is a powerful blessing.

Not necessarily. I have a friend who asked a priest to enroll him in the Brown Scapular. He made a blessing hand gesture over the scapular and gave it back to him. That is NOT enrollment in the brown scapular.

If you want to bring the blessing for the St. Benedict medal with you, you can print it from here: osb.org/gen/medal.html

That page also tells you about the symbols on the medal.

If you are near a Benedictine Abbey or a parish staffed with Benedictines, the priests there will know what to do. I had my Cross of St. Benedict blessed at our local abbey, and it is the same blessing that is done with the medal.

My priest blessed mine as a normal cross of which i am well happy.

My point is…
that take care to TELL the priest what to do.
We need to show them respect in all instances. To ASSUME that he doesn’t know how to properly bless a Sacramental is not very charitable.
If you want an ENROLLMENT or a SPECIFIC blessing, say so, and he can tell you if he’s familiar with it.
But if you ask for a blessings, you’ll get a blessing. Which is fine.

Thanks to everyone for their quick feedback. I appreciate your thoughts.

Also, I do have a copy of the St. Benedict medal blessing.
