Dearest subjects of Christ, Lord of Lords,
The Basilica di Santa Sabina all’Aventino, in Rome, is the custodian of a work of art that is regarded as the oldest figure of Christ crucified which has survived (5th Century) On the cypress wood doors which guard the entry to this capitol of the Dominican Order, Our Lord is presented between the two thieves, but without a cross. It is theorized that this is due to the reluctance of our ancient co-religionists to depict Christ in a manner worthy of a slave or a non-citizen.
It is good to meditate that Christ is no slave or powerless subject, even in death. On the contrary, His death was the most perfect act of pure obedience to the Father as the Apostle says, “He humbled himself by becoming obedient to death-- even death on a cross.” He is the Lord of Lords in saecula saeculorum amen. Even in agony, the Lord is Master of His own fate.
The Realm recommends this excellent article by the banally-named, but respectable romaartlover to learn more about the basilica and its art.
