I’m an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion in my Latin parish. You’re absolutely right, Marduk. The faithful need to consume immediately. Ordinary or Extraordinary, the person with the Precious Body is charged with safeguarding the Blessed Sacrament. I have stopped distributing and gone after someone if I notice they didn’t consume. I say “You need to consume that, now” and wait there for them to consume. If the people waiting in line need to wait, no problem.Perhaps some of our Latin brethren can clarify, but I though it was a rule that when CITH is practiced, the Host must be consumed in front of the minister, or at least while still at the foot of the altar.
Blessings,
Marduk
(FYI, in many Latin parishes there are EMHC stationed away from the altar area due to the large number of faithful receiving. Some stand in the back half of the church and the faithful in the pews in that section receive back there. Those in the pews in the front half of the church receive up close to the alter. So not all the distribution is “at the foot of the altar”.
