crux gemmata?

Hello,
I read about the crux gemmata in the Da Vinci book (I know, I know). I am interested in having this made for me by my jeweler. I was wondering if there is anything wrong with a Catholic wearing one? I have not finished reading the book but from my web searches I cannot find anything that makes it bad to wear.

It seems to me that like most physical items, in and of itself, it is neither good or bad. This leaves only your intention, or the message others receive when they see it, that determines its acceptability.
 
I am proud of being Catholic and I want to wear something that shows it. I got away for a while after the scandal but have come back to the Church.

Well, if others would associate a heretical work of fiction with what you are wearing, that might not be the best choice. After all, as davidv cited, you don’t want to give people a false idea of what you are trying to say.

There are many fine crucifixes and other symbols of the faith at any Catholic gift shop. It might be better to look into one of those to see if something else moves you to devotion for our crucified Lord that you’d like to share with others by wearing it. Just a suggestion. 😉
 
Here’s a good story.

Yesterday I went to the shrine and bought a Miraculous Medal. After buying it I looked it over and wanted better quality. I took it back to the store and returned the medal. When I got home I had in the mail a letter from the Miraculous Medal Association and in the letter they included a Miraculous Medal!

Unreal! I’ve decided to skip out on the crux gemmata and in fact I have stopped reading the book, even though I know it is fiction-I’m hesitant to continue reading it.

That is great! It’s not really a coincidence, it’s a God-incidence. 😃

I believe it is better to read good material that builds up our faith by presenting ideas that do not plant the seeds of doubt. The very idea that Jesus married someone and no one bothered to mention it in the NT or in the Early Church Fathers is just plain ridiculous. I can’t imagine why anyone would buy into such a notion except that it titillates or because would be a scandal to the Church if true. Sadly, there are even Catholics who want to believe this to push their own agendas.

Certain royal families in Europe wanted to believe that they were the descendants of Jesus and Mary Magdalene so they could claim a divine right to rule. As I understand it, this idea was based on a heretical work that came out after the time of the NT and the ECFs. If I’m wrong, I’m sure someone will correct me. 😉
