"Crying at Mass." A Woman wonders why this happens

It’s pretty normal to cry at Mass at least once in a while.

In addition to the emotion that being with Jesus can cause, those of us who’ve lost loved ones are connected to them however briefly by the sacrifice of the Mass. That can bring tears too.

I grew up watching my mom regularly crying at Communion. As a child I found it unnerving, as a teen I found it embarrassing, as an aging lady I now do it myself.

I went to confession at a local shrine last Saturday and they do confessions before/during the Mass.

When the entrance hymn started, so did my tears, right there in the confession line.

But I had my mask and glasses on so I don’t think people noticed.

Some lady was crying openly and pretty loud at Adoration the other day.

I’ve been there and done that myself too.

There had just been a funeral upstairs in the church, so I wondered if she was one of the mourners come down to sit with the Lord in her grief.

I’ve cried at Mass before, and at Adoration. In my case it was during times of particular inner struggle, and facing those head on in the presence of God.

I never presume about what someone else’s reason is. I just take tears as a sign that something ‘true’ is happening inside of them, and I take noticing as an opportunity to ask for God’s blessings and encouragement for them.

Sometimes I cry when they play a song that makes me think of a lost loved one. Like their funeral song. And “Ave María” ALWAYS makes me cry because it’s so beautiful

For some reason, in my parish I have never heard a certain song, at least not that I can remember. But on the EWTN Mass I heard it, is based on the verse ‘if you love me, feed my sheep’… it brought me to tears it was just so beautiful.

That is a compassionate and understanding response. I can’t imagine anyone but the most immature snickering at someone whose soul has been so overwhelmed that tears flow freely from their innermost core. Actually, anyone who would snicker is probably quite insecure and uncomfortable in his or her own skin.

God gave us the ability to experience emotions for a reason – He wants us to.

I think St. Teresa of Avila called it hysteria. Regardless, I think it is a mystical/ spiritual experience. My sister does it a lot.
