Does anyone know of a good prayer or patron for people experiencing what I guess would be culture shock? I almost feel like I am going crazy sometimes, but I really just want to go home. Bad. Any ideas.

I don’t know if this is the right place for this. There are other requests on here that I consider more important.

Thank you.

Unofficially, any missionary.

Officially, there is no definite category for “culture shock”, but consider Sts Bakhita, Patrick (*the *Saint Patrick), North American Jesuit martyrs, Bd. Teresa (Mother Teresa). Some saints were taken away as slaves. Also remember that we Catholics love irony: guess who the patron saint of foreign missions is? A little girl who never went 100 miles away from where she was born.

Haha.
Thanks, Apollos. That helped a lot. I bought a St. Patrick pin when i got here and I wondered why…

I think st. Dymphna is a good patron as well. She’s the patron of mental illness. Not saying that you’re ill or anything, but being homesick is definitely a mental stress and burden as is culture shock. I’m sure she’s quite equipped to help you. I pray too that you feel better.

St. Monica is one that I would ask to intercede for me. St. Augustine in his work, Confessions, wrote that his mother (St. Monica) had some difficulty adjusting to the culture in Rome. She was upset that they weren’t fasting twice a week (or something to that nature) which was her custom. St. Augustine responded to her that famous quote: “When in Rome do like the Romans”.

I’ll pray for your situation to improve…
