The pope alone occupies the Chair of Peter. The cardinals and archbishops do not. 👍

It is a fact that the Holy Spirit speaks to the Pope in ways not spoken to the cardinals. 👍

The thing is the Popes words did not need any defense. He did not say anything wrong. He was quoted out of context. He was merely stating someone else position, which he clearly said was wrong.

It’s like saying “I heard the leader of the KKK say racism is good for America. I believe this is wrong.” Clearly I did not mean to say that racism is good.

The whole controversy is so ridiculous as to be a non issue. The fact that Mulims are offended is crazy, They have absoulutely no reason to be offended because the Pope was in fact saying that discrimination against Islam is wrong.

To have to apologize for muslims misquoting him is crazy and just shows you how the powder keg mentality of ISlam is way too sensitive and very dangerous.

The best thing for this situation is for no one to say anything, because whatever you say will start up another firestorm. The Pope is absolutely right that some sort of dialogue between Muslim leaders and the West is needed. For Islam to react so violently on a misquote in insanity, on their part, not ours.

Other posters have already said it, the Pope was not speaking ex cathedra. He was misunderstood and/or taken out of context.
There are people, not just Muslims, who go out of their way to be offended. This is another example of this phenomenum.
