The current teaching on the Church regarding the Interpretation of Scripture can be found in the following document…
The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church, Pontifical Biblical Commission, 1993.
Read it, and ask questions on it, it is an important document.
On a broader point, scientific analysis of the bible is an important tool to help us understand the text. It is certainly not the final word, but makes a contribution.
Dont get caught into the trap of rushing to judgement with people like Fr.Raymond Brown. You dont have to agree with everything he says, but listen to him, understand what he is saying, and why he is saying it. Biblical criticism is important for the Church to do, because firstly it deepens our understanding of scripture.
Father Browns credentials are exceptional. He made a valuable contribution to scientific exegesis, and I believe he did so in good faith. Why would you listen to him? Because the Church listens to him. The PBC is under the direct control of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. He may be wrong in a lot of things, but he may be right in a lot of things.
I will make this point to finish…people sometimes hear things from theologians which disagree with their understanding of the faith. Sometimes the theologian may be wrong, but often the persons understanding of a certain issue may not be properly formed.
This leads to the impression in the mind of some that the theologians are an errant bunch who are trying to undermine the Church. Very few theologians are this, and certainly none that I have met.
