hey everyone! Ever since I decided to take my faith more seriously (which was around three years ago), I’ve run into a bit of a dilemma. I’m a big reader, I mean I will absolutely gobble down books if you give me the opportunity. However, when I’m reading, I always feel a twinge of guilt whenever a character cusses, or especially, when they take the Lord’s name in vain.

For the past few years I’ve believed I’ve found a solution: before I read a book, I quickly skim through and scribble out the curse words with a black pen (of course, I only do this if I own my own copy of the book). Then, when I read it, I won’t have to say the bad words in my head.

Is this something that’s okay to do? I mean, is the fact that I’m still buying books that have bad words in them wrong?

Haven’t you said before you have scrupulosity? If so, you should follow the advice people have already given you: don’t ask these types of questions here. Talk to a priest, mention that you struggle with scrupulosity, and follow his guidance.

I don’t want to sound unkind or anything. It’s just that asking these types of questions to strangers online is not going to help you.

I might struggle with it, I’m still kind of figuring that stuff out because I’m young. I would talk with a priest more about this kind of stuff, but I’m in the middle of moving and it’s been hard with all of the COVID stuff!

No not a sin. Relax yourself and enjoy your books. You’re not buying a pornography book or anything. There’s bad words everywhere!!!

Btw sounds like scrupulosity 💖 bring this up to your confessor he will bring you comfort about it

I get it. Once you can, make an appointment with a priest to discuss all this stuff, and then follow his guidance. Don’t go looking for second opinions for reassurance. Form a relationship with one priest and then trust his guidance.

The Upper Room is a catholic hotline. They are so sweet if you are feeling a bunch of anxiety. I know it’s hard to see a priest because of covid. These people are nice and trained to help.

Here’s their number: 1 (888) 808-8724

Dear one, it is only a sin if you, with full consent, use the curse word yourself against God. Please do read up and take to heart what is a sin and what is not a sin.
It is NOT a sin to read a curse word in a book. Learn to read books with a critical and objective eye. That is one of the things you should be learning in your education. To read what someone else wrote is NOT necessarily what you yourself consent to.
How old are you?

It is important for you to learn what is a sin. Please consult the Catechism.
