"Cut out your eye"...literally?

I can’t remember what Bible verse, but we all know the story where Jesus says some stuff along the lines of “If your eye causes you to sin, cut it out and throw it in the fire.” Are we literally supposed to do that?

And please, no links, just a yes or no answer with a short explaination.
 
No, it is not literal. Jesus was using exaggeration to make a point. Its similar to when people say, “I’m so hungry I could eat a horse” or “I’d give my left arm for that.”

Jesus’ point was simply that we need to make an effort to avoid sin and keep our focus on things that are eternal rather than passing.
