Two years ago, the Ecumenical Patriarch Cyril Loukaris - notorious for a Calvinist confession of faith, his virulent hatred for Catholicism, and his opposition to the Union of Brest - was glorified by the Alexandrian Patriarchate in communion with Constantinople. This post from John Sanidopoulolos’ blog came out after Patriarch Theodoros celebrated a Divine Liturgy in his honor a couple days ago.

What are we to make of this? How should an Eastern Catholic regard Loukaris?

I suppose I should say something since it is “close to home.”

HUH!!!

Kind of my reaction too…

His martyrdom by the Turks (blamed on the Jesuits) and his opposition to Rome were motivations.

The issue of the veneration of Cyril Lucaris first came up for me in a book by the Ukr. Orthodox Metropolitan of Canada, His Beatitude Ilarion Ohienko (+ memory eternal!).

The book was about Saints and yet-to-be saints honoured in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. He listed Cyril Lucaris among the locally venerated martyrs and said that the Patriarch “awaits his glorification.” And because one of the charges by the Turks that led to his death was that the Patriarch had meetings with the Ukrainian Kozaks with the view to urging them to war with Turkey etc., Cyril Lucaris was honoured by Ukrainians etc.

The Greek Orthodox Church affirms that there is no evidence that St Cyril Lucaris ever became a Calvinist or drew up the articles of religion that controvert the Orthodox Christian faith. This is the official affirmation of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of New Rome.

Saint Cyril Lucaris is therefore a saint of the Orthodox Church of the Patriarchate of Alexandria and other Orthodox Churches may, if they so wish, include him in their calendars.
