Hi there,

I’m new here, and in the early stages of the RCIA. I was a Christian for a year or two before that, but never got baptized because I couldn’t find a church that fit me, until I found the RC church; now there’s no going back, because I finally realize that I’m not suppose to fit the church to me, but fit myself to the church that’s grounded in history. 🙂

In any case, I’ve started praying the Liturgy of the hours, and am really learning to love it. The trouble is I’m not sure which readings to do. I know there are readings associated with the Liturgy of the Hours, but there are also daily mass readings. Are they both the same? If not, which ones should I be reading to allow me to cover the bible most thoroughly? Thanks,

Scott

Hi Scott,

The Liturgy of the Hours uses the psalms, while the readings are usually from the Fathers, Doctors of the Church etc.

The readings from mass are a good way to go through the bible. Over a period of three years, you will cover all the passages that are most pertinent to your spiritual life.

Hi Verbum,

Thanks for the information, it would seem that the mass readings are the thing for me at the moment. I suppose my next question would have to be: what is not included in the daily mass readings? If I miss a list of births and deaths from the Old Testament I’m not too worried, but is there anything else left out? WIll I truly have approached the bible in a systematic way if I do this reading schedule, or will there be bits I ought to have examined but have not? I’d rather read a little more each day and have ready everything fully at the end of three years if the material is worth being studied. Thanks,

Scott

I am on an email list that sends out the daily readings along with the Navarre commentary each day. It works nicely if you choose to go with the mass readings. It used to run off the Cin site, but it is at yahoo now. Here is the main page for it at yahoo. There is no chatter on the group, just the scripture email.

Pug, you’ve given me exactly what I was looking for, thank you so much! I may not cover the entire bible this way, but I’ll get in a lot more reading than I otherwise would, and more importantly I’ll understand it. Thanks again,

Scott

Are these only the gospel readings, or am I missing something? The view I see only has the gospel readings (I’m new to yahoo groups so I may have done smoething wrong when I created my account).

Elzee,

No, usually it is not just the gospel, but yesterday I didn’t receive the OT portion. Since the Navarre commentary is incomplete for the OT, that could be why, or it could be that the list owner didn’t have time to send it out. I’ve been on the list for a few years, and every so often there is a glich, but the list works well enough for my purposes. Right now I do have the OT reading from Numbers for Thursday (today) in my inbox, and it has four paragraphs of commentary with it

If you look in the history of old posts on yahoo, you can see that the OT does get included. Click here for some of July’s old posts starting with number 414

I have no idea how to help if it is a problem with yahoo groups. I only became a member of yahoo when the list switched to yahoo from CIN. I never really go to the yahoo site. I just have the readings emailed to me every day. My only thought is that there are two ways to subscribe, getting the readings daily and getting them a week in advance. I am on the daily list. Maybe they are different?

Thanks. I’ll see how the weekly mailing goes and may switch to the daily if I dont’ get all of them. I probably just need to get more familiar with yahoo and groups too - it could definitely be ‘user error’! Thank you!
