Damien of Molokai Icon

Hi all,

I was wondering if you could help me find a legitimate icon of Damien of Molokai for sale? So far I’ve only found goofy renditions that probably shouldn’t pass as icons and the notorious Monasteryicon.com one which I am avoiding. Your help is appreciated!

Hi. Have you tried the EWTN religious articles web page? I know that they have a rather extensive list of icons available for purchase. I would also try checking gift shops of Shrines, Cathedrals, or Monasteries in your area. For example, where I live, outside Washington DC, we have the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and the Franciscan Monastery located within 15-20 miles, and both have gift shops with large selections of religious articles.

On a separate note, I would avoid the Monasteryicon.com web page. You may follow the link to information indicating that this site is a fraud of dangerous proportions run by a con-man of sorts. orthodoxinfo.com/general/monasteryicons.aspx

That is the same one we have hanging in my Latin parish. I pray before it almost daily. We also have a wonderful life-size statue of him in our gathering space. We were very blest to venerate his holy relic in our church when it was traveling back to Hawaiʻi Oct. 2009 following his canonization. Priests of Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary served in this parish for many years. Our devotion to St. Damien began with that relationship.

His feast day is a week from now. May 10th.

Do you know where the quote is from? “Our Lord permits us now and then pick a beautiful rose among sharp thorns.”

Rik Fitch used to have some wonderful paintings of St. Damien but I don’t find them shown anymore.

When I was part of a group preparing religious pamphlets for the Church in Ukraine, our priestly leader, Fr. Damien, said it was from one of St Damien’s letters.

On the island of Molokai, there is a road-sign indicating the way to Kalaupapa where he had his mission. To this day, there is a fresh lei of flowers hung on it every morning by person(s) unknown.

Even the pagan Hawaiians honour his memory. His associate, Joseph Dutton, has been declared “Hawaii’s Saint” by the state legislature - although I don’t know what that means and why a secular legislature would take it on itself to do such a thing.

Ua mau ke-ea oka aina i ka pono! Hawaii’s motto: The prosperity of the land is perpetuated through righteousness!

If I had to choose, I would hand-pick and icon of St. Agbar the Christian king.

I came back and wanted to add something, you can order the Skete catalog of many icons to pick and choose from.

I ordered this skete.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=1130&Category_ID=82 , and its very helpful.
