Just saw tonight’s Colbert Report, Dan Brown was the guest pushing his latest book. Colbert gave him a pretty good ribbing about his propositions about the church and the nature of Jesus. Brown didn’t have a lot to say, seemed kind of awkward like he was trying to play cool but wasn’t quite sure how to take the Colbert character’s bluster. Pretty interesting.

What is the deal with Colbert? I know he is Catholic and apparently teaches the Catechism at his parish. But the way his language mouths off sometimes makes me wonder. And what are his stances on all the pertinent issues?

Anybody know?

Isn’t Colbert as he appears on the Colbert Report a satirical figure? (I have never seen it myself) But that is probably why you find him confusing… he doesn’t actually stand for anything.

I have heard he may be a deacon.

I can’t back it up but I’m pretty sure this guy is a pretty good Catholic. Just because a guy likes to use bad language doesn’t mean he isn’t a good Catholic.

There have been a few interviews like this. He has a bit of a problem in that his character is a satyrical right winger which the audience is supposed to hate, which sometimes makes it hard to actually take a good position and share the faith. In this interview, I think the audience got it, but I’ve seen others where the audience cheers for interviewee where Colbert is actually trying to make a point about Christian truth.

I think it would be great if he wrote a book on faith someday. From what I’ve read, he’s not an ultra-orthodox conservative Catholic (he had the “nuns on the bus” on the show), but he is very knowledgable, and he could lead a lot of young people to take a look at the Church.
