Danger of New age/ gnosticism

I moved in with my mother who isnt catholic because i sold my house.

She’s into new age things like esoteric bible reading, gnosticism, cathars etc and does meditation and prayers to go with it.

Do you think this could be harmful for me or even invoke demonic oppression?

I would definitely take steps to battle against this: I would hang a crucifix in my room and I would say the St. Michael Prayer several times a day. Holy water would be good also. When your mother isn’t around, you might sprinkle the Holy Water in the house and say prayers. Pray for your mother’s deliverance from this.

I wouldn’t start arguments with her, but in love, and with soft calmness, let her know where you stand. And if you sprinkle Holy Water in her home, don’t tell her about it.

Ask for God’s Spirit to come more fully into your own life, and then remember the scripture which says, “He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world” (I John 4:4) In other words, God’s Spirit within you, is stronger than the demonic spirit in the world. So be on your guard, but have faith that God is stronger than any demonic oppression.

All of this may sound drastic, but really, it’s a spiritual battle and should be taken seriously. The New Age is powerful and very deceptive.

There is always hope. Sometimes these things can be stepping stones towards something bigger, like a return, or entrance into the Church. We should all pray for that end. Continue with frequent prayers, and use the sacraments.

She’s your mother. I think you should cherish every moment you have to spend with her. I don’t believe anything she’s doing is going to open you up to demonic possession; rather, I strongly believe that’s just superstition. It sounds to me like she’s become fascinated (in the literal, true, original sense of the word) with a sort of rogue Christianity. That is to say, Gnosticism isn’t necessarily that far from Catholicism. It’s in the same general ballpark, if looked at from a certain perspective. I think you may have success if you supplied her with a good book or two which blurs the line between Orthodoxy and Gnosticism. Such books do exist, and they’ve been written by Catholics of the highest order. If those kinds of esoteric ideas appeal strongly to her sensibilities, it’s certainly possible that you might be able to draw her into the Church in a way that makes sense to her. If she’s naturally drawn to unorthodox and far-out esoteric ideas, then that could be her path to God and His Church, strange as that may sound. If you don’t mind, I would like to private message you with the name of a couple good books to gift her with.

There is a good book I recommend called Catholicism and the New Age by Father Mitch Pacwa.
 
I haven’t seen my sister in 15 years because she became a “witch” and followed New Age … I don’t believe it is a good thing to spend time being around such people … originally I had tried to continue to see her … but she wouldn’t stop trying to indoctrinate me and my family with her new-found beliefs. I pray that you will find somewhere else to stay.
