Generally speaking, I think NFP is self-regulating. If a couple is willing to put up with the self-denial involved in conservative NFP or lengthy abstinence, it’s almost certainly the case that they have just reasons. (I realize that there may be situations where one member of a couple has no libido at all and hence finds abstinence no struggle at all and that that situation may complicate discernment.)

Bear in mind that “hard” varies from couple to couple, influenced significantly by individual libido (which is influenced by age and and other life-factors). Anything less than “every 2nd day” seemed a drought in younger days…🙂
Sure…but at the same time there is clear evidence of health benefits to maintaining a active sex life for married couples… I won’t go in to detail… but heart, prostate, cardiovascular to name a few…easily researched. Less to do with libido and more to general physical health.

I’d love to believe that, but it’s quite possible that the casaulity works in the opposite direction. Sickly people may naturally have less sex, while healthy, fit people have more.

I wouldn’t put it in a casaulity bucket, there is too much evidence supporting the obvious health benefits. Talk to your doctor.

I’d still like to think I’m in my younger days and yes that does seem hard.🙂

And if you look at it as a whole month, the amount of sex while using NFP vs ABC would probably be similar but what makes it harder is the time in between sex.

I just want to say thank you to anyone that has prayed for me in this thread. Seems like everywhere I turn lately there is something about marriage and love and the use of contraceptives. From turning on catholic radio, to the podcast I mentioned earlier, to me just going into a catholic church on a business trip in North Dakota and they happen to have a free CD with several talks on it…a couple of them being on this subject.

And then last night, I had a dream, I won’t give too much detail:) but it was an intimate dream with me and my wife. Very intimate and very loving. In the dream, my wife and I had just finished abstaining as part of NFP. I remember getting a sense in the dream telling me “see…see how holy and loving this is?”. It was very comforting and exciting let me know that NFP isn’t going to hurt our love and marriage but enhance it.

Oh wow, CatholicSooner! It sounds like the Holy Spirit is really moving in your life. I got goosebumps reading your post. God bless you and your wife and family!
