I’m trying to figure out exactly what’s going on in my spiritual life. Is it common in the night of sense to have remembrance of long past sins and to feel pain and agony over them? I think I am in the night of sense now but it’s hard to say for sure as I don’t have a spiritual director.

In the dark night of the senses, one should strive to not experience pleasure from any of the five senses unless it’s truly bringing you closer to God; Gregorian Chant can sometimes involve pleasure, but it’s more likely to bring you closer to God. Even eating can be a source of delight, but it’s also necessary so that you have the strength to serve God.

I too often remember my past sins and I believe that doing so helps me to avoid sins in the here and now. But they can become debilitating to your spirituality if done in excess.
