i’ve been reading st john of the cross’ The Dark Night of the Soul lately, at the suggestion of someone on this site. i read it thinking that it would help me progress in my spiritual life. much to my surprise, it did that by making me start all over.

what an amazing book!

has anyone else here read The Dark Night of the Soul?

Yes. And :amen: As with all his work, it’s a book to return to throughout one’s life; like reading Scripture, you see something new each time.

I’ve been reading it lately too, along with Imitation of Christ (Kempis) and Way of Perfection (St Teresa of Avila). They are all deeply inspiring and there have been many moments–especially with Dark Night–where i’m like, wow, that’s exactly what i’ve been going through. It’s such a tremendous help to have the guidance from those who have themselves journeyed so far along the spiritual road. I have been very thankful for them and for the Holy Spirit for having led me them.

i always wondered why people paid so much attention to the saints. i still generally don’t ask for their intercession, but you sure can learn a lot from their writings and lives. i’ve heard people say that but i think it’s finally sunken in. i’ve gained a new appreciation for our heavenly brothers and sisters.

i’m not even done with this book, and i’m trying to decide what from who i want to read next 🙂

I read it years ago. I read it again last month as part of my Office of Readings.

I have heard of it before but haven’t read it yet. I definitely will though after hearing your review of it. Sounds too good to pass up.
